The last two months have been the best two months of Cong Pham’s poker career – after finishing third in the 2013 World Poker Tour Borgata Poker Open in September, Pham won the HPT Daytona Beach Main Event in mid-October.
There’s one long day of poker standing in his way, but Pham is on the path to his second WPT final table of the year after bagging the overnight chiplead on Day 2 of the 2013 bestbet Jacksonville Fall Poker Scramble. It’s Pham’s second consecutive session on top, having bagged the Day 1A lead as well, and his 892,000 stack has him well out in front. He’s followed most closely by Andrew Whitaker (772,000), Billy Swaringen (619,000) and Randall Price (616,000).
There are no former champions left among the final 26 players, but there are some tournament veterans still in search of their first WPT title. Ryan Eriquezzo, Jared Jaffee, David Diaz and Jeff Madsen each have above-average stacks, while Jacob Bazeley and Matt Glantz will have to fight their way back from shorter stacks.
It was a long journey from 123 players down to 45 and the money, but the bubble burst just after the dinner break. Byron Kaverman was one of the players to double on the bubble, but he only survived just long enough to get 45th and a min-cash. Tony Ruberto (44th), Alex Venovski (43rd), Jake Schwartz (33rd) and Micah Raskin (28th) each earned small cashes before busting late on Day 2.
Play resumes at 12 pm Monday afternoon in Jacksonville, with the field set to be whittled down from 26 players down to a final table of six. A champion will be crowned Tuesday night, and they’ll receive $252,749, a seat in the 2014 WPT Championship and a place on the WPT Champions Cup.
