The WPTDeepStacks Poker Tour is a series of tournaments with buy-ins ranging from $500 to $2,500 based mainly in the United States and Canada. Players cashing in these events earn WPTDeepStacks Player of the Year and World Poker Tour Player of the Year points.
The field generated a prize pool of $384,120, easily topping the $300,000 guarantee as 36 players cashed. Among the notables cashing but missing the final table: Jacob Bazeley (16th), Joe Kuether (20th), Tristan Wade (25th), Zo Karim (26th), Allen Kessler (30th) and John Dolan (36th).
The final nine started with Ory Hen well ahead with Claudio Piedrabuena and Lawrence Whyte his closest competitors. Stuart Greenbaum was the first elimination at the final table when he called all-in with A-T against Piedrabuena’s Q-T on a ten-high flop. A queen on the turn moved Piedrabuena in front to stay. Cody Ferguson experienced the agony of being ahead at the wrong time when he was eliminated in eighth place when his A-8 dominated Whyte’s A-7 until Whyte spiked a seven on the flop.
The field quickly went from seven to five with the exits of Brett Bader and Carlos Loving as Lawrence Whyte moved in front. Stephen Diamantas was eliminated in fifth place when his A-T shove ran into the A-K of Nick Pupillo. Unfortunately for Pupillo, he became the next player to hit the pay window after his pocket fives were outflopped by Whyte’s A-Q.
Three-handed, Lawrence Whyte held a commanding lead over Ory Hen and Claudio Piedrabuena and quickly made a deal with Whyte earning the win, $88,500 and a $3,000 package to the WPTDeepStacks World Championship in Calgary while Hen and Piedrabuena each cashed in for $57,000.
The lone European stop on the WPT/DSPT takes place at the Dragonara Casino in Malta February 5-8, with a €440 Main Event.
