Power Rankings: Marvin Rettenmaier Increases his Lead at WPT Cyprus

Marvin Rettenmaier Increased his Lead at the WPT Merit Cyprus Classic

The top 20 spots in the BLUFF Power Rankings have stayed the same same this week with a few small changes in point totals that didn’t affect any player’s position. But at the top of the standings the more things change, the more they stay the same. Marvin Rettenmaier made another deep run at a World Poker Tour event, making the final table of six in a field of 329 players at the first event on the Season XI schedule, the Merit Cyprus Classic.

Rettenmaier won the WPT World Championship to close out Season X in May, and he could become the first player in history to win back-to-back WPT events late on Thursday. He has a good chance to do so, considering he comes into the final table in third chip position, but in any case Rettenmaier will add to his lead in the Power Rankings. Here is a look at the points up for grabs at the Merit Cyprus Classic final table, where one year ago Rettenmaier finished in sixth place:

1st – 210
2nd – 147
3rd – 105
4th – 92.4
5th – 79.8
6th – 69.3

Rettenmaier already has a lead worth 70.28 points over Vanessa Selbst, who is currently in second place, so even if he busts in sixth place at the final table he will double his already impressive lead. Another WPT title would not only give him a lead close to 300 points in the Power Rankings, but it would also put him on top of the 2012 BLUFF Player of the Year race with more than 1,000 points (he currently holds 826.27).

The young German professional took home 312 points for his first WPT win at the World Championship at Bellagio in May and he also took home $1,196,858 in prize money. Rettenmaier added an additional 214.6 points to his Power Rankings total thanks to six cashes at the 2012 World Series of Poker. He also had a very strong April, where he scored two triple-digit POY scores worth 290 points total in Berlin and Monte Carlo. This year’s results have marked an arrival on the world stage for Rettenmaier. He wasn’t exactly quiet in 2011, but all but a handful of the 22 cashes that led to 935.14 POY points were scored in Europe. Check back in next week to see just how far Rettenmaier has extended his lead.
