The largest poker tournament to take place outside of the major tours this past week was the Heartland Poker Tour Mile High Poker Open that took place at the Golden Gates Casino & Poker Parlour in Black Hawk, Colorado. For the third straight time attendance was high and generated a prizepool of over $1 million, and while the local turnout was strong, the big field was a big draw from all over the country with players from at least 30 states taking their shot.

Wyoming’s Mike Harris was the biggest beneficiary. The cattle rancher topped a field of 739, the second largest field in the history of the HPT, to win $245,073. Harris beat Colorado native Carla Sabini heads up, but Sabini received a consolation prize of $139,839, making her the most successful female player in the history of the tour.

David “ODB” Baker was among the many pros in the field, and he would post the best finish of that group by making the final table and finishing sixth. Other pros to enter were Greg Raymer, Bryan Devonshire and Chance Kornuth. Raymer actually took seven shots, with re-entry allowed, but the recent HPT champion and former World Series of Poker Main Event champion failed to cash. Devonshire would go out 32nd, while Kornuth went out on the final-table bubble in seventh.

The World Series of Poker Circuit stop at the Horseshoe Casino in Bossier City, Louisiana has been running all week and there have been a few preliminary events of note. Captain Tom Franklin was the most noteworthy winner, with a victory in a $300 Pot-Limit Omaha event good for $11,930. The largest preliminary event of the week was a $1,000 No Limit Hold’em event that attracted 144 players to create a $144,000 prize pool. That preliminary tournament was won by Caufman Talley, who took home $40,319. Cards are currently in the air for the $1,675 No Limit Hold’em Main Event and you can read all about the conclusion of that event on BLUFF after it ends early next week.

The Borgata Hotel and Casino in Atlantic City, New Jersey also wrapped up another successful Borgata Poker Open tournament series this past week. In addition to the World Poker Tour Main Event that was won by Ben Hamnett on Friday, the 26 preliminary events on the schedule drew strong and surpassed their guarantees. Theo Tran was the most noteworthy winner during the final week of preliminaries at this tournament series that began back on September 5. Tran topped a field of 262 players to win $64,807 in a $1,000 Six-Max No-Limit Hold’em Re-Entry event.
